Creating Dishes YouTube channel, and for very good reason.

With just a packet of Arrowroot biscuits, a tin of sweetened condensed milk, and a generous handful of M&Ms, you get a batch of around 30 golden, chewy, colourful slices that disappear embarrassingly fast. Whether you are filling a lunchbox, bringing something to a party, or just treating yourself on a Tuesday afternoon, this recipe has you covered.

I first shared this on the Creating Dishes YouTube channel and the response was wonderful. Now I am bringing it here to the blog with all the tips and tricks you need to get it right every single time.

Why You Will Love This M&M Slice

1. Arrowroot Biscuits (250g)

Arrowroot biscuits are the perfect base for this slice. They are lightly sweet, have a fine, crisp crumb, and hold together beautifully once baked with condensed milk. You will find them in any Australian supermarket — the Arnotts version is a classic. Crush them to a rough crumb with a mix of fine dust and small chunks for the best texture and bite.

2. Sweetened Condensed Milk (1 × 395g can)

Condensed milk is the magic that binds this slice together. It coats the biscuit crumbs, sweetens the whole thing, and bakes up into a golden, slightly sticky, fudgy layer. You use the full can — no wasteful half-tins sitting in the fridge. Once baked and cooled, it firms up into a perfectly sliceable texture.

3. M&Ms (1 cup + extra for the top)

The star of the show! Fold most of the M&Ms through the mixture, then press extra ones on top before baking so every piece looks gorgeous. The chocolate inside the M&Ms melts slightly in the oven, adding little pockets of extra chocolatey goodness throughout the slice.

Quick Tips: Read through the full recipe before you start. Make sure your baking tin is lined and ready to go before you mix — once the condensed milk and biscuits come together, you will want to move quickly.

Tips for the Best 3-Ingredient M&M Slice

Vary your biscuit crush

Resist the urge to blitz the Arrowroot biscuits to a fine powder. A rough crush with some small chunks gives the slice a far more interesting texture — a little crisp, a little chewy, with pockets of biscuit throughout.

Press it down firmly

The key to a slice that holds together neatly is really packing the mixture into the tin. Use the flat bottom of a glass or measuring cup to press it down evenly and tightly. This also helps the top come out smooth and even.

Do not skip cooling

It is tempting to cut into it the moment it comes out of the oven, but please resist! The condensed milk needs time to cool and firm up properly. Cutting while warm will result in crumbly, messy pieces rather than clean, neat slices.

Customise it

Once you have mastered the base recipe, try it with Smarties for a different look, or mix in a handful of shredded coconut with the biscuit crumbs for extra texture. You can also press a few extra M&Ms into the top right after baking while the slice is still warm so they really embed into the surface.

Serving Suggestions

This slice is wonderful at room temperature or straight from the fridge. Cut it into small squares for a party platter, pop a few pieces into a lunchbox, or serve it alongside a cup of tea for an afternoon treat. The colourful M&Ms on top make it look like far more effort went in than it actually did — always a win!

Preheat your oven to 170°C (150°C fan-forced / 338°F). Line your baking tin with baking paper, leaving some overhang on the sides for easy removal once baked.

Placing Arrowroot biscuits in a blender.

Crush the Arrowroot biscuits into a rough crumb. Use a food processor, or seal them in a ziplock bag and crush with a rolling pin. Aim for a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks — this gives a better texture than a completely uniform powder.

glass bowl with crushed biscults, M&M and pouring condensed milk over the top.

Mix together. In a large bowl, combine the crushed biscuits and the full can of sweetened condensed milk. Stir well until every crumb is coated. Fold in most of the M&Ms, saving a good handful for the top.

Pressing the 3-ingredient mixture in baking tin

Press into the tin. Spoon the mixture into your lined tin and press down firmly and evenly with the back of a spoon or spatula. The more firmly you press, the better the slice holds together. Scatter the reserved M&Ms over the top and press them in gently.

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, until the slice is set and lightly golden around the edges.

Baked 3-ingredient slice on a cooling rack.

Cool completely in the tin before lifting out. This step is important — cutting into a warm slice will cause it to crumble. Once fully cooled, lift out using the baking paper overhang, place on a cutting board, and slice into squares or rectangles.

  1. 💡 Pro Tip
For the cleanest cuts, use a sharp knife wiped with a damp cloth between slices. If the M&Ms on top are cracking under the knife, let the slice sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before cutting.

    Storage

    • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for up to 5–7 days.
    • Can be frozen for up to 1 month — wrap individual pieces in cling wrap and freeze in a zip-lock bag. Thaw at room temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Can I use a different type of biscuit?

Yes! While Arrowroot biscuits give the best flavour and texture for this recipe, other plain sweet biscuits work too — Marie biscuits, Milk Arrowroot, Tennis biscuits, or Digestives. Avoid flavoured biscuits like chocolate or ginger as they can overpower the M&Ms.

Do I use the full can of condensed milk?

Yes — the full 395g can is what binds 250g of biscuit crumbs together and gives the slice its golden, fudgy character once baked. Using less may cause the slice to crumble apart. Stick with the full can for best results.

Can I swap the M&Ms for something else?

Absolutely! Smarties are the most popular swap and look just as colourful. Mini M&Ms, Reese's Pieces, or even mixed lollies all work. You could also try peanut M&Ms for an extra crunch.

Why did my slice crumble when I cut it?

The most common reason is cutting before the slice has fully cooled. The condensed milk needs to cool and set completely to hold everything together. Let it cool fully in the tin at room temperature before slicing. Also make sure you pressed the mixture down firmly before baking.

Why did the M&Ms on top melt or look dull?

This is normal — the heat of the oven will melt the candy shells slightly. For the best-looking top, press some extra M&Ms into the surface immediately after the slice comes out of the oven while it is still warm. They will set in place as the slice cools and look great.

How long does it keep?

At room temperature in an airtight container, around 3 days. In the fridge, 5–7 days. You can also freeze individual pieces for up to a month — just thaw at room temperature when needed.

Can kids make this?

This is one of the best recipes to make with children! The only heat involved is the oven, and the steps — crushing biscuits and stirring — are perfect for little hands. Pressing the M&Ms into the top is a particularly satisfying task for kids! But please don't let the kids near the oven!

Can I make this gluten free?

You can substitute the Arrowroot biscuits for a gluten-free plain sweet biscuit. Check that your M&Ms are also gluten free — most plain M&Ms are, but always check the label for your region.
