Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Can I make Mummy Dogs ahead of time?

Yes, you can wrap the sausages in pastry a few hours ahead and keep them covered in the fridge until you're ready to bake. This is a handy tip if you're prepping for a party.

Can I freeze Mummy Dogs?

You can freeze them unbaked. Wrap the sausages in pastry, place them on a tray to freeze individually, then transfer to a freezer bag once solid. Bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cook time.

What can I use instead of hot dog sausages?

Cocktail sausages work well for a smaller, bite-sized version, which is great for little hands and party platters.

What can I use if I don't have puff pastry?

Shortcrust pastry or crescent roll dough can also be used, though puff pastry gives the best puffed-up "bandage" look once baked.

How do I stop the pastry from unravelling in the oven?

Press the ends of each pastry strip gently onto the sausage as you wrap, and tuck the final end underneath the mummy. Brushing with milk also helps everything stick together as it bakes.

Are Mummy Dogs suitable for freezing after baking?

It's best to freeze them before baking rather than after, as the pastry keeps its texture better when frozen raw and then baked fresh.

What can I use for the eyes if I don't have candy eyes?

A small dot of mustard, tomato sauce, or mayonnaise works well to stick on a small piece of olive, or you can simply use a dot of sauce as the eye itself.

Can adults enjoy these too?

Definitely! While they're a fun activity for kids, Mummy Dogs are a tasty party snack for the young at heart too — serve with mustard or tomato sauce for dipping.
